Residency rule, United Arab Emirates

UAE Residence Visa — Time Away

Summary

A standard UAE residence visa stops being valid when you live outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row. The count is one continuous absence, so coming back into the UAE ends it and a new count starts when you leave again. After the limit you need a new entry permit before you can return. Golden, Green and Blue residence holders are exempt, and so are some other groups. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) runs the rule, and Dubai's immigration office has its own process for Dubai visas.

Limit
180 days outside the UAE in a row
Period
One absence, from the day you leave to the day you return
What happens
The residence visa is nullified automatically
Way back
An entry permit from ICP, with a fine of AED 100 per 30 days
Run by
ICP, and the GDRFA for residents of Dubai

Who it applies to

The rule

The UAE government's official portal states the rule in its general provisions for the residence visa. If an expatriate resident lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously, the residence visa is nullified automatically. The same page also describes the limit as six months. If this happens, the person must apply for a new entry permit to enter the UAE again.

The portal lists people the rule does not apply to. They include the foreign wife of an Emirati citizen; domestic helpers who accompany Emiratis studying abroad on a scholarship, UAE patients sent abroad for treatment, or staff of UAE diplomatic missions; expatriate residents and their companions sent abroad for treatment, with a medical report approved by UAE medical authorities; public sector employees sent abroad by their employer for training or to work in the employer's offices, and their families; students enrolled in educational institutions abroad who hold valid residence visas; investors holding valid residence visas; and any other person excluded by a decision of the ICP.

The ICP names further exempt groups on its service page: holders of Golden, Green and Blue residence, and the husband of a UAE national woman when she sponsors him. They may enter the UAE at any time while the residence remains valid.

For other residents there is a way back. The ICP has a service called Issuance of a Permit to Stay Outside the Country for More Than 6 Months. You apply from outside the UAE after you have completed 180 days abroad, you give a valid reason with proof, and you pay a fine of AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside the UAE. After approval you must enter the UAE within 30 days, including the approval date. The ICP says this service does not apply to residents of the Emirate of Dubai.

Why it exists

A residence visa is given so that a person can live in the UAE, usually for work, family or investment under a sponsor. The state does not want residence visas to stay open for people who have left. A fixed limit on continuous absence is easy to check at the border. The exemptions and the entry permit protect people who had a good reason to be away.

Counting the days

You count the days you are outside the UAE in one absence. The count starts when you leave and ends when you enter the UAE again.

  1. Find the date you last left the UAE, from your passport stamp or your travel record.
  2. Count the days since that date. The limit is 180 days in a row.
  3. Plan to enter the UAE before the count goes over 180 days.
  4. If you cannot return in time, check if you are in an exempt group, such as Golden, Green or Blue residence.
  5. If you are not exempt, collect proof of your reason and apply for the entry permit from outside the UAE after 180 days.
  6. When you enter the UAE, the count ends. A new count starts on your next departure.
How Countr counts it. Countr counts the days of your current absence from the UAE, in a row, and shows them against the limit of 180 days. When you re-enter the UAE the count starts again from zero, which is how the rule works. If Countr cannot see where you were on a day, the count also starts over. This makes the number smaller, never bigger, so check your own dates when your photo history has gaps. The rule does not apply to Golden and Green visa holders. Countr cannot see your visa type or any of the other exemptions.

Examples

Back in time

Imran leaves Dubai on 1 March 2026 to work on a project in Kenya. His 180th day outside the UAE is 28 August 2026. He flies back and enters the UAE on 20 August 2026. His absence was shorter than the limit, and his residence visa stays valid. A new count starts when he leaves again.

Over the limit

Mei has an Abu Dhabi residence visa sponsored by her employer. She leaves on 1 March 2026 and is still abroad on 29 August 2026, her 181st day outside. Her visa is no longer valid for entry. She applies to the ICP from abroad for an entry permit, gives her reason with proof, and pays the fine of AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside. After approval she has 30 days to enter the UAE.

A short visit resets the count

Paolo holds a standard residence visa and lives mostly in Italy. He leaves the UAE on 10 January 2026 and returns for four days on 15 June 2026, after 156 days away. He leaves again on 19 June 2026. The first absence ended when he entered the UAE, so a new count of 180 days starts on 19 June 2026.

Exceptions

Common misconceptions

“I can be outside the UAE for 180 days in total each year.”
The rule is about one continuous absence, not a yearly total. Several shorter trips do not add up. But one absence of more than 180 days in a row ends the visa.
“My visa is valid for two more years, so I can stay away.”
The expiry date on the visa does not protect you. A standard residence visa is nullified automatically after more than 180 days outside the UAE in a row.
“The Golden visa has the same six-month rule.”
It does not. Golden residence holders can stay outside the UAE for more than six months and keep the visa. The same is true for Green and Blue residence.
“After six months away I can still fly in and fix it at the airport.”
No. The entry permit must be applied for from outside the UAE and approved before you travel. Then you have 30 days to enter.

Questions and answers

How long can I stay outside the UAE on a residence visa?

Up to 180 days in a row on a standard residence visa. If you stay outside for longer, the visa is nullified automatically, unless you are in an exempt group.

Does a short trip back to the UAE reset the six months?

Yes. The rule counts continuous time outside the country. When you enter the UAE, that absence ends, and a new count starts when you leave.

What can I do if I have been outside the UAE for more than 180 days?

You can apply to the ICP for a permit to enter. You apply from outside the UAE, give a valid reason with proof, and pay AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside. Residents of Dubai must use the Dubai immigration office.

Is the limit six months or 180 days?

Official pages use both. The UAE government portal says more than 180 days continuously and also speaks of six months, and the ICP permit can be requested after 180 days outside. Counting 180 days is the safe reading.

Does this rule affect my UAE tax residence?

It is a separate rule. The visa rule is about keeping your immigration status. Tax residence depends on days of presence, with its own trackers: UAE Tax Residence — 183 Days and UAE Tax Residence — 90 Days.
