About the 183-day rule

183 days is just over half a year, and many countries use it as one test of tax residency. It is rarely the only test, and the period and counting method differ by country. Read our guide to the 183-day rule, or look up your country on the trackers page.

What does this calculator count?

It counts the days you were in one country during a calendar year, or during the 12 months ending on a date you choose. Arrival and departure days both count as full days, which is how most 183-day rules count.

Does staying under 183 days mean I am not a tax resident?

Not always. Many countries also look at your home, your family or where your life is based, and some count days differently, for example midnights in the UK. Use this as a first check and confirm with the tax authority or an adviser.

Which period should I choose?

Many countries use the calendar year. Others, like Portugal, Brazil or New Zealand, use any 12-month period. Some use a tax year that starts on another date, such as 6 April in the UK. The Countr app has the right period built into each tracker.
