# India e-Tourist Visa — Each Visit

Visa rule, India. Page: https://usecountr.com/trackers/visa-in-etourist-visit/

## Summary

On India's 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist Visa, each visit has its own limit: your continuous stay must not be longer than 90 days. For citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan the limit is 180 days. Leaving India and entering again starts a new visit, but a second limit runs at the same time: no more than 180 days in India in one calendar year. The e-Visa cannot be extended, so you must leave before the limit. The Bureau of Immigration, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, runs the rule.

- Limit: 90 days for each visit
- Higher limit: 180 days for citizens of the USA, the UK, Canada and Japan
- Period: One continuous stay, from entry to exit
- A day counts when: You are in India for any part of it, including arrival and departure days
- Sister limit: 180 days in India in one calendar year
- Run by: Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs

## Who it applies to

- Tourists who hold a 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist Visa and plan a long trip through India.
- People who spend the winter in Goa, Kerala or Rishikesh and want to stay as long as the visa allows.
- Yoga students, retreat guests and long-term travellers who think about leaving and entering again to stay longer.
- Citizens of the USA, the UK, Canada and Japan, who have a higher limit for each visit.
- Travellers who visit family or friends in India several times a year.

## The rule

India gives the e-Tourist Visa in three lengths: 30 days, 1 year and 5 years. The 1-year visa is valid for 365 days from the date the electronic travel authorisation is granted, and the 5-year visa for five years from that date. Both allow multiple entries. The validity tells you when you may enter. It does not tell you how long you may stay.

The stay is limited by two conditions that the Indian authorities publish with the visa. The first is the subject of this page: continuous stay during each visit shall not exceed 90 days. For nationals of the USA, the UK, Canada and Japan, continuous stay during each visit shall not exceed 180 days. The second is the sister rule, India e-Tourist Visa — Each Year: the maximum stay in India during one calendar year should not exceed 180 days.

A visit ends when you leave India through immigration. If you then enter again while the visa is valid, a new visit begins and the count of continuous days starts again at 1. The yearly total does not start again. So a traveller with a 90-day limit can make two full visits in a calendar year, and a traveller with a 180-day limit reaches the yearly limit with one full visit.

The e-Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible. You cannot add days at an office in India, and you cannot change it into another kind of visa. If you stay past the limit, you need an exit permission from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) before you can leave, and a penalty can follow. The immigration officer at the border looks at your whole situation and can refuse entry even with a valid e-Visa.

Why it exists: A tourist visa is for travel, not for living in India. The limit for each visit, together with the yearly limit, lets real tourists make long trips and return several times, and it stops people from settling in India on a tourist visa. People who want to stay longer for work, study or family life must apply for the visa made for that purpose.

## Counting the days

You count the days of one continuous stay in India, from the day you enter to the day you leave. Any part of a day in India is one day.

1. Check which limit applies to your passport: 180 days for the USA, the UK, Canada and Japan, and 90 days for all other eligible countries.
2. Take the date of the entry stamp in your passport as day 1.
3. Count forward to day 90 or day 180. That is the last day you may be in India on this visit.
4. Check that the same day is still inside the validity of your e-Visa.
5. Add your days from earlier visits in the same calendar year and check that the total is not more than 180.
6. Leave on or before the earliest of these three dates.

How Countr counts it: Countr counts any part of a day in India as one day, so the arrival day and the departure day both count. It counts each visit on its own and compares it with the limit you choose, 90 or 180 days, to match your passport. When you leave India and enter again, the count for the visit starts again, but the yearly total in the sister tracker does not. This tracker does not cover the 30-day e-Tourist Visa, where you must leave within 30 days of your first arrival. Countr only counts days the phone can see. If your photos or location history have large gaps, the app can show fewer days than you really stayed.

## Examples

### A full 90-day visit

Claire, a French citizen, has a 1-year e-Tourist Visa. She lands in Delhi on 1 November 2026. Counting 1 November as day 1, day 90 is 29 January 2027. She must leave India on or before 29 January. Her days also fit the yearly limit: 61 days fall in 2026 and 29 days in 2027.

### A border trip restarts the visit but not the year

Jonas, a German citizen, is in India from 10 January to 9 April 2026, which is 90 days. He spends a week in Nepal and enters India again on 17 April. A new visit starts, so he has not broken the 90-day limit. But he has already used 90 of his 180 days for 2026. He can stay 90 more days, until 15 July, and after that he cannot be in India again until 1 January 2027.

### A 180-day visit uses the whole year

Emily, a US citizen, enters on 1 February 2026. Her limit for one visit is 180 days, so she may stay until 30 July 2026. That one visit is 180 days in the calendar year 2026. She has no days left for a second trip that year, even though her 5-year e-Visa is still valid.

## Exceptions

- Citizens of the USA, the UK, Canada and Japan may stay 180 days on each visit, and all other eligible nationalities 90 days.
- The 30-day e-Tourist Visa has its own condition: its validity is 30 days from your first arrival in India, and this limit does not restart when you leave and enter again.
- The e-Visa is not valid for Protected Areas, Restricted Areas and Cantonment Areas. You need separate permission from the civil authority to visit them.
- A regular tourist visa in sticker form, issued by an Indian mission, can carry different conditions. Read the conditions printed on that visa.
- Other e-Visa types, such as e-Business, e-Medical and e-Conference, have their own stay conditions.

## Common misconceptions

- "My e-Tourist Visa is valid for 5 years, so I can live in India for 5 years." No. The 5 years are the time in which you may enter. Each visit is limited to 90 days, or 180 days for four nationalities, and each calendar year to 180 days.
- "I can stay as long as I like if I cross into Nepal or Sri Lanka every 90 days." A new entry starts a new visit, but the limit of 180 days in a calendar year still applies. After two full 90-day visits in one year you have no days left.
- "I can extend my e-Tourist Visa at an office in India if I need more time." No. The e-Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible. Plan your departure before the limit.
- "The 90 days are counted from the day my visa was granted." No. The validity of the visa runs from the day it was granted, but the 90 days of a visit run from the day you enter India.

## Questions and answers

### Does the day I arrive in India count as day 1?

Count it as day 1. Countr counts any part of a day in India as one day, and that is the careful way to count. If you land at 23:00, that date is already your first day.

### What happens if I stay 91 days on a 90-day limit?

You have overstayed the condition of your visa. You must apply to the FRRO for permission to leave before you can depart, and a penalty can be charged. An overstay can also make it harder to get an Indian visa later.

### How long must I stay out of India before I can enter again?

The published e-Visa conditions set no minimum gap between visits. You can enter again as long as the visa is valid and your days in the calendar year are below 180. The immigration officer can still ask about the purpose of a quick return.

### I have two passports. Which limit applies to me?

The limit follows the passport on which the e-Visa was granted and with which you enter. If that is a US, UK, Canadian or Japanese passport, the limit is 180 days for each visit. For other eligible passports it is 90 days.

### Do I have to register with the FRRO on an e-Tourist Visa?

No registration is asked for on the e-Tourist Visa within the allowed stay. Registration with the FRRO is linked to stays beyond 180 days on other visa types, such as the e-Business visa.

### How early can I apply for the e-Tourist Visa?

You must apply online at least 4 days before the date of arrival. The official site says applications for the e-Tourist Visa can be made up to 120 days before travel.
